What...Why...Where???

What is "Skimming the Sightings"?

It's the monthly sightings report feature of DE RERUM NATURA, GCNC’s monthly newsletter, and features bird reports regarded as rare or occasional that may be of interest to local and other birders.

Why submit field data to the Clearinghouse?

Field data is entered into a database that can be used to update and correct the Seasonal Distribution Checklist. Other birders might be interested in when and where to locate species of interest. Some species, in a historical perspective, can represent the health of the local environment and is of significant scientific value.

Which sightings should be submitted?

Any sightings thought to be significant may be submitted. Of special interest are A) unusual numbers, B) the first or last occurrence of the season, and C) breeding evidence. The Seasonal Distribution Checklist can serve as a guideline. Reporting is suggested for species indicated as 'occasional' (reported on fewer than 20% of all fieldtrips in proper habitat) or 'rare' (less than 5%) for the date. It is also important to note if species indicated as "abundant" or  "common" are not seen (in proper habitat & season). Repeat sightings of individual birds may be indicated with an "R" in the quantity field.

Who may contribute?

You can! Simply go to the Clearinghouse at http://www.texasbirding.net/txclrhouse/ and follow the on-screen instructions.

Because of publication deadlines, data received after the 28th can still be input to the database but not submitted to De Rerum Natura for the current period.

What happens to the data? It is entered into a database where it can be retrieved systematically. On a quarterly basis, data is available for review by editors of American Birds and the Texas Ornithological Society. Submission of your data infers that you are releasing this information for future reference and publication in other journals.
