Our December 2004 Peru trip was skillfully orchestrated by the staff at Manu Expeditions, and sampled no fewer than four endemic bird areas from high puna and glacier-fed lakes of Junín to arid Tumbesian scrub and then to northeastern Andean cordilleras and the fabled Marañón Valley. 
The list of endemics and endangered species recorded on our visit are far too numerous to mention here, but some of the most memorable specialties included Pale-browed Tinamou, White winged Guan, Puna Grebe, Gray-backed Hawk, Diademed Sandpiper-Plover, Ochre-bellied Dove, Gray-cheeked Parakeet, Bronze-winged Parrot, Tumbes Hummingbird, Black-breasted Hillstar, Purple-throated and Royal Sunangels, Bronze-tailed Comet, Black Metaltail, Olivaceous Thornbill, Gray-bellied Comet, Marvelous Spatuletail (aptly named), Striated Earthcreeper, Blackish-headed, Maranon, Chinchipe, Great and Russet-mantled Spinetails, Cactus and Junin Canastero, Equatoria Graytail, Rufous-necked and Henna-hooded Foliage-gleaners, Collared and Chapman’s Antshrikes, Maranon [Northern] Slaty-antshrike, Ash-throated Antwren, Chestnut-crowned, Rufous ['Cajamarca'], and Ochre-fronted Antpittas, Blackish Tapaculo, Maranon Crescent-chest, Pacific Elaenia, Inca Flycatcher, Cinnamon-breasted and Black-and-white Tody-tyrants, Pacific Royal-flycatcher, Gray-breasted Flycatcher, Rufous-webbed Bush-tyrant, Piura Chat-tyrant, Sooty-crowned Flycatcher, Bar-winged Wood-wren, Buff-bellied Tanager, Great, Gray-winged, Buff-bridled, and Little Inca-finches, Rufous-breasted Warbling-finch, and Black-cowled Saltator.
The Tumbesian area yielded only the second documented Peruvian records for Collared [Pale-mandibled] Aracari and Flame-rumped [Yellow-rumped] Tanager. The Marañón Valley and Abra Patricia areas are truly exceptional areas for species rarely seen elsewhere in the world, and this trip is highly recommended for the best of Andean birding.
